FIR against suspended Sohra Syiem for fund misuse

SHILLONG: The suspended Syiem of Hima Sohra, Freeman Sing Syiem has allegedly misused public fund.The allegation against Syiem is that he availed honorarium for many months during his suspension period and also withdrew money from bank accounts maintained by the Dorbar. Following the anomalies, an FIR was lodged against him by a resident.The resident of Mawphu 16 villages, under Sohra Syiemship, Brawell Rynjah filed the FIR against Syiem on May 23 and urged the police to take necessary action for illegally withdrawing money without the Dorbar’s resolution.The FIR was following a revelation of misuse of money in the reply to the RTI application filed by him. The RTI reply provided from the Office of the Syiem of Sohra, Sohra Syiemship on April 15 is regarding  the statement of account of Hima Sohra, from August 2, 2018 upto March ending 31, 2019.    The RTI reply showed that the former chief had illegally withdrawn the public fund which is Rs 50,000 and Rs 4 lakh on August 30, 2018 and August 31, 2018 respectively from Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank, Sohra branch and Rs 50, 000 from State Bank of India,Sohra branch on August 28, 2018 without the authorisation of Dorbar. The Syiem was suspended by the KHADC on August 28, 2018 after he was appointed in 1983. On  May 11 this year, the RTI applicant received a reply from the Public Information Officer (PIO), office of the Syiem of Sohra, Sohra Syiemship stating that that there was no Dorbar’s resolution pertaining to the money withdrawal with effect from August 25, 2018 upto March 31, 2019. Inspite of his suspension, Syiem withdrew the honorarium of Rs. 25,000 per month on September 1, 2018, October 2, 2018, November 17, 2018 and December 18, 2018. In 2019, he withdrew the honorarium on January 10, February 15 and March 9. The total honorarium withdrawn during his suspension is Rs 1, 75, 000. The FIR also alleged that Syiem on March 14, 2019 donated Rs 5000 to Myntri Khongwir (acting chief) for his treatment out of the public fund.
