SHILLONG: After the Congress poor show at the Centre, the general secretary of United Democratic Party (UDP) and consensus candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), Jemino Mawthoh said the Congress’ debacle should be seen as a warning bell.
The Congress fought with the BJP aiming to oust the saffron party at the Centre only to be defeated by the BJP for a second term.
During a press conference on Tuesday, he was asked to comment on the observation made by Congress MLA Process Sawkmie that the loss of the MDA candidate should be a warning bell for the regional parties.
Mawthoh, however, smiled and said, “It is instead a warning bell for the Congress.”
He indicated that there may be defection to other parties by Congress politicians following Congress’s poor show.
Mawthoh criticised the Congress for misleading the people using the issues of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), cow slaughter and anti-conversion law.
According to him, the CAB was initiated by the Congress when the Congress representatives embraced Hindu outsiders.
In the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, the Congress won 52 seats while the BJP won 303 seats.
