SHILLONG: The opposition Congress in Meghalaya has come down heavily on the ruling NPP-led MDA government and accused them of facilitating illegal coal mining besides tampering with the institution of governance.

Former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma on Monday said that the state government was facilitating illegal mining and illegal transportation of coal at the cost of the people and the state.

Citing media reports and fine imposed by the NGT on the state as a clear indication of it, Dr Sangma said that his accusations are not political rhetoric but based on actual happenings adding that they will expose this government and nobody will go Scott free.

Attacking the ruling alliance, Dr Sangma said that there was a blatant interference of people in power in terms of revenue realisation in the state. Stating that such practices are a dangerous trend, Dr Sangma said, “Political parties comes and goes but institution of governance remains and when these institutions are manipulated, tampered upon, the institutions that is left is corrupt and not fit to deal with the challenges of governance.”
