SHILLONG: The Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is making efforts to mould and shape the Marriage and Divorce Department in a manner to ensure that the bonds of marriage are strengthened.
In the wake of growing number of broken homes and single mothers, Executive Member (EM) in charge of the department, Martle Mukhim, said all aspects dealing with marriage will be looked into.
He, however, said mutually agreed divorce is up to the parties concerned.
As for the Khasi Lineage Bill, Martle said it will be studied thoroughly adding that the EC has instructed the EMs of the KHADC to examine the same.
It may be mentioned that the Khasi Lineage Bill, 2018 was passed last year by the KHADC when HS Shylla was the CEM. It seeks to restrain women from taking non-tribal husbands and lays down that a woman will lose her Scheduled Tribe status if she goes ahead.
