SHILLONG: Work on the entry and exit point-cum-facilitation centre at Mendipathar railway station will begin within two weeks.
North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu, on Monday said that the project is in final stages of implementation and all the modalities have been decided.
Informing that the entry and exit point-cum-facilitation centre will be constructed on the plot of a land of the Railways, he added that even now a general routine check is done by infiltration department as and when the train arrives and departs.
However, once the entry and exit point-cum-facilitation centre is completed, a dedicated team of Tourism, Police, District Administration and other departments will ensure checking of people, adding the exit of the people from the railway station will be only through one way and people can be easily scrutinized there.
The government is confident that the setting up of the entry and exit points in different parts of the state would boost the confidence of the NGOs and public over concerns on influx.
At present, only one train leaves the station for Guwahati every morning and it comes back same night.
It is learnt that on an average, around 300 to 400 people from Garo Hills use the train.
The railways have assured that the frequency on the station would be increased once the number of passengers increases.
In addition, there are also talks to increase the railway line from Mendipathar in Garo Hills till Dalu.
