SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday said the growing drug menace with links beyond the state’s boundaries needs to be discussed at the regional level.
“We have mentioned this at different levels to the bureaucrats in Delhi and even to political leaders. May be in weeks or months time we may have a joint discussion on how to tackle this menace,” he told reporters here.
He said drug trafficking has been going on for quite some time and following police action “things started coming out of the cupboard.”
The chief minister said that drug trafficking will be under constant watch of the intelligence wings and the police.
On human trafficking, Sangma said the government is taking aggressive action in this regard.
“We are not going to take this very lightly. A lot of intelligence has been collected in the past few months. We have decided that we will go aggressively about it,” he said.
It may be mentioned that recently the West Jaintia Hills police busted a prostitution racket in Mihmyntdu village and rescued as many as 20 young women and nine minors. In this connection, 10 persons were arrested.
