SHILLONG: NPP MLA from Rongara Siju constituency, South Garo Hills, Rakkam A Sangma feels that education of youths and all-round development can tackle militancy that once plagued Garo Hills.
Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, the MLA said that militancy has come down to almost zero in the once militant-infested South Garo Hills region and the state government must utlilise the positive and peaceful environment in Garo Hills to develop the region. He, however, feared that if the state government could not make the most of the prevailing peaceful environment, the old situation might return.
Lamenting that the district lags in connectivity and was troubled by militancy in the past, he said that since things have improved the state government should lay thrust on improving connectivity, education and improving the tourism circuit in the district.
Expressing concern about connectivity, Sangma said that if connectivity improves, the living standards of people will improve as the district is also rich in mineral deposits.
According to the MLA, education is the master of resolving all issues and therefore major thrust should be given to improve education in the district.
Informing that he has apprised Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of the issue, he expressed hope that in years to come South Garo Hills will develop.
It may be mentioned that South Garo Hills was one of the worst affected districts when the banned Garo National Liberation Army was at its peak few years ago.
