NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Student’s Union (KSU), West Khasi Hills (WKH) District Unit, expressed deep concern over negligence of the state government in granting the required number of sanctioned post to Nongstoin College which is the oldest college in the district.
Nongstoin College was granted deficit status in 1996 with only 6 sanctioned posts. After more than two decades, the college was deprived of the rights to get an additional sanctioned post from the government.
Franklin Syiemiong, Education Secretary of the KSU, West Khasi Hills District Unit, said the Union understood that Nongstoin College and the district, as a whole, were deprived of its right in all-round development by Government. One of the reasons of the backwardness of WKH is due to the deprivation of opportunities by the government, he added.
He further said that the district deserved government colleges but the government was not willing to identify the importance of education in rural areas.
General Secretary of the KSU, WKH Unit, Rishotskhembor Kharbani told media persons here that the union has met different chief ministers and education ministers to submit memorandum regarding the additional sanction post of Nongstoin College and the demand of government college in the district.
Kharbani told that during the year 2005, the union submitted the memorandum to the then Chief Minister DD Lapang for the additional sanctioned post of Nongstoin college, in 2010, the union reminded the state government by submitted another memorandum to the then Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma.
A fresh memorandum was submitted in 2013 again to Mukul M Sangma, followed by a reminder of the memorandum in 2016 to the Education Minister Roytre Laloo, which fell on deaf ears.
He said that the union has confidence in the present government to rectify the imbalances and to improve the higher education in rural areas which we have long been deprived for more than two decades in the district.
Meanwhile, the Union is expected to meet the Chief Minister of the state soon in order to appraise this issue along with many issues concerning the district.
