Shillong: Renowned Khasi singer Gilbert Nongkynrih, who sang the famous song Elmolin, passed away at the age of 63 due to ill health on Thursday. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
A high grade artiste of AIR, he recorded around 30 songs.
Elmolin, Angelina, Sngikha Ba Suk and Sandy are the popular songs of his first recording on June 18, 1983.
His second recording which included famous songs like U Khun Ba Duk, Khlem Maphi and Lehnohei were recorded on March 12, 1991.
His songs Elmolin, Angelina, Sngi Kha Basuk and many more were a hit and played on AIR regularly back in the 90s. Nongkynrih did his last recording on June 19, 2009.
Nongkynrih has contributed to the music industry through his unique voice and enthralled the audience through his folk style of singing.
Nongkynrih is the son of Joseph Warjri and Biola Nongkynrih. The singer had his early education at St. Anthony’s School.
He worked in the department of Botanical Survey of India but later resigned to pursue his career in singing.
Nongkynrih married Sunabon Kurkalang and have one daughter, Miranda Kurkalang.
Following the death of the singer, the Meghalaya Dancers’ Association has extended their condolences to the family and lauded the contribution of Nongkynrih to the society. The association also prayed for the family and the departed soul.
