MVSA lends hand to victims
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Veterinary Services Association (MVSA) came forward by making a contribution towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund with a hope to ease the hindrance in restoring lives of the citizens who have been affected by the incessant downpour across the state. Dr WMW Khongwir, president of MVSA, handed a cheque of Rs.1,00,000 over to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the presence of General Secretary of MVSA Dr Brightstar Langbang and other executive members of MVSA.
Support to EMRI workers
SHILLONG: The Workers’ Power of Meghalaya (WPM), a federation of progressive trade unions and associations along with Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) extended its solidarity and full-fledged support to the workers of Meghalaya EMRI Workers’ Union in their struggle and upcoming negotiations with the GVK EMRI management and the state government for the fulfilment of their charter of demands which include 20 per cent increment in salary, sanctioning of manpower, local-to-local transfer of staff members, among others. The representatives of the management and the state government in the committee have been given a 2-month deadline by the union to fulfill the demands.
Dry days declared
JOWAI: The District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills District has declared dry days in Nartiang Elaka area on account of Dallioship Election in the Nartiang Elaka, on Thursday and Friday, being the polling dates, and on Monday, being the day for counting. The dry days have been declared on the request of the Deputy Secretary Executive Committee & Returning Officer, Dallioship Election, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. All IMFL-licensed premises (wholesale and retail sale), bars, canteens, country spirit shops etc. will remain closed on the days mentioned.
ABVP observes U Tirot Sing Day
SHILLONG: The ABVP Shillong observed U Tirot Sing Day at KL Bajoria College where the chief guest of the programme was the retired principal of Seng Khasi College Kong Drimsibun Kharkongor, ABVP Meghalaya State Secretary Darilin Tang and the principal of the college. Speaking at the event, Kharkongor said U Tirot Sing was a great freedom fighter of India who did not give up against the British and fought till his last breath.
KSU to hold meeting with youths
Nongpoh: Concerned over the rising drug users in the district, the Khasi Students Union (KSU), North Khasi Hills District Unit (NKHD) has decided to hold a meeting with the youths of several villages under Nongpoh town on July 26 at Sajer Community Hall, Nongpoh, to discuss and find out ways and means to curb the lingering menace in the society. KSU NKHD President Ferdynald Kharkamni said, “as a responsible youth of the society and leader of the Union, we feel that it is our responsibility to tackle the rising drug users in the city,” adding that in connection with this, the union will hold meeting with the youth leaders of several villages.
Multiple events in NEIGRIHMS
SHILLONG: To commemorate the birth anniversary of former National Convener of IAP ALS BLS group, Late Dr Anand Shandilya, the members of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) Meghalaya state branch have held weekend-filled activities. The annual 32nd IAP quiz for the undergraduates, college round, which was held on Friday in the lecture theatre 1 in NEIGRIHMS, saw active participations from the MBBS students from 7th and 9th semesters. The winners Shreya Paul and Marjiya Tampakmayum, both students from 9th semester, will represent the college and state at the divisional round which will be held in Guwahati by October. Following this event, a successful Basic Life Support (BLS) course: a mass awareness programme was also conducted in NEIGRIHMS.
