CEO directive on bio-medical waste

WILLIAMNAGAR: The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Williamnagar Municipal Board had given a circular recently to all the people concerned directing them to avail authorisation from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) under the provisions of Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016.
According to the circular, the persons who generate or handle the Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) in any form including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, dispensaries, veterinary institutions, pathological laboratories, educational institutions, health camps, forensic laboratories, etc. irrespective of their size, numbers and the quantity of BMW need to acquire grant of authorisation from the MSPCB.
The circular further said that the failure to comply with the provisions of the rules will attract penal action as per the Environment Protection Act, 1996, which includes imprisonment for a period of five years or a fine of Rs. 1,00,000.00 or both.
