More security at railway stations
Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has beefed up security at all major stations in the region ahead of Independence Day, officials said on Monday. The railway stations are being guarded by respective state police personnel and other security agencies, NF Railway spokesman P J Sharma said here. “The security of Guwahati Railway Station is of paramount importance as it is the biggest station of the North East with a footfall of 40,000, and more than 30 pairs of trains pass through daily,” he said. A quick reaction team comprising fully-armed Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) jawans along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel are on shift duty at the station, Sharma said. Track patrolling in vulnerable stretches by motor trolleys, random frisking and anti-sabotage checks are also being carried out, he added. (PTI)
Sikkim gets new DGP
Gangtok: Senior IPS officer A Shankar Rao has been appointed as Sikkim’s new Director General of Police (DGP), a government notification has said. Rao, a 1987 batch IPS officer of Sikkim cadre, replaced SD Negi, who has been transferred to the Labour Department as its principal secretary, it said. Rao is at present posted as the Officer on special duty at the state Tourism and Civil Aviation Department office in New Delhi. A Shankar Rao will be the new DGP of Sikkim with immediate effect, the notification issued by Tenzing Gelek, Principal Secretary to the state government, said. (PTI)
2 militants arrested in Manipur
Imphal: Two active cadres of proscribed militant outfit People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were arrested by security forces in Manipur’s Imphal East district, police said on Monday. A combined team of Manipur police commandoes and 5 JAK Rifles, while conducting counter insurgency operation at Kongba Bazar area in Imphal East district on August 9, arrested the two militants, a press release issued by PRO of Manipur Police said. A case has been registered at Irilbung police station for further investigation, the release added. (PTI)\
Devotees participate in Jalabhisek
Ambassa (Tripura): Thousands of people took part jubilantly in the ‘Jalabhisek’ of Lord Shiva on the last Monday of the month of Saravana in Dhalai district here. People, including youths and aged persons, participated in the procession where they walked bare feet and covered almost 15 kilo metre to pour water on Lord Shiva. (UNI)
