Schools, organisations take part in celebrations

SHILLONG/RIBHOI/ MAWSYNRAM/ Nongspung: The Army Public School (APS) Shillong celebrated the 73rd Independence Day with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour where Col Anurag Saxena, SO1 Education, 101 Area, was the Chief Guest.
The APS Umroi Military Station celebrated the day with complete zeal. For the very first time in the history of the school, a lady officer, Lt Col Amarjeet Kaur from Headquarter 24 Mountain Brigade, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) also celebrated the day with active participation from the students, teachers, staff members and others.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, on the other hand, also celebrated Independence Day with full fervour and zeal. Prof. D.P. Goyal, Director of IIM Shillong, unfurled the tricolour.
Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), Umroi Cantt, celebrated the day with great pomp with participation from the teachers and the students.
A group song, speeches, group dances and a skit were also presented by the school students.
The Mawsynram Border Area College held a two-day celebration which started on Wednesday with active participation from the teachers, students, NSS programme officers and staff members.
Rotary Club
The Rotary Club of Shillong, under the leadership of its President David Umdor, along with the support of the Rotary Club, Pine City Shillong, Inner Wheel and the Interact Club of Auxillium School, visited Civil Hospital in the city and distributed fruits and packed biscuits among 300 patients.
Nongspung Association
The Nongspung Area Youth Social Welfare Cultural and Sports Association also celebrated the 73rd Independence Day at Mary Fatima Secondary School, Nongspung, East Khasi Hills District. Various programmes were also performed by the students and others who were present during the celebrations.
NEC
The North Eastern Council Secretariat, Shillong, also celebrated the 73rd Independence Day in the city. The programme commenced with the hoisting of the national flag at its premises which was followed by the singing of the national anthem. The officers and staff of the NEC were also present during the occasion.
CGHS
Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Shillong was also among the ones to celebrate the Independence Day in the city. The programme kicked off with a flag hoisting ceremony followed by the national anthem. The cultural programme, however, was the main attraction of the celebration.
The programme was attended by Additional Director, CGHS Shillong, Central Govt. (Civil) Pensioner Association, Area Welfare Officer of Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee (CGEWCC) Shillong and other retired senior doctors.
SPARK
SPARK, also celebrated the day where more than 400 children participants comprising of rag pickers, domestic helpers, working children, street children, slum children, school dropouts and other under-privileged children from East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District attended the programme held across various centres.
Punjabi Sabha
Punjabi Sabha took part in the Independence Day celebrations at Hotel Pegasus Crown.
Shillong Academy
Shillong Academy also observed the day on Thursday at Upper New Colony. Senior member of the committee, Ranadhir Dhar hoisted the tri colour.
