Awareness programme on drug abuse and MMR vaccination
SHILLONG: The Rotary Club of Shillong conducted an awareness programme on the menace of drug abuse in children and adults along with the awareness on importance of getting vaccinated with the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) for children. The programme, which was held at Seng Khasi School, Mawphlang, was led by the club’s president David Umclor along with other delegates. The programme was attended by around 100 students from the school, the Seng Longkmie of Mawphlang and the Seng Sarnia Mawphlang. A pledge was also taken by the students of the school to ‘Say No to Drugs.’

Training on integrated farming
JOWAI: The Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE) in collaboration with the Bethany Society and the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) organised a training programme on integrated farming at Ksehryngshang village on Tuesday. The head of SURE HH Mohrmen informed that the training programme will help the local farmers to improve their farming skill with more production. “In this training, we had provided various kind of farming ideas and techniques to the farmers who participated in the training programme. Farming such as natural farming, cattle farming known as Bokashi were also parts of the training programme,” Mohrmen informed.
Moobakhon MDC, Dawan Lyngdoh, who was the chief guest during the programme, called upon all farmers to take the training programme seriously as they would be getting various ideas and information from experts.

IRCS workshop concludes
SHILLONG: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Meghalaya, organised a three-day workshop on ‘Safer Access Framework’ which was supported by the IRCS National Head Quarters and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), New Delhi, on Monday at Hotel Polo Towers. Considering that Meghalaya is a high-risk area in terms of natural disasters, various strategies, action plans, co-ordination and bench marking with time lines was done and discussed by the participants during the programme. The participants of the workshop included various professionals, disaster management experts, field officers and students.

Financial awareness event
Nongpoh: The Reserve Bank of India, Shillong, on Wednesday conducted a one-day field level financial awareness event at St Luke Hall, Nongkhrah village in Ri Bhoi. The objective of the programme is to spread financial awareness among the masses and to introduce every individual to the formal financial system. In addition, the participants were taught on the nuance of the roles and functions of RBI, grievances redressal mechanism in banking, precautionary measures from various types of financial frauds and the way forward on cashless economy etc. Anurag Asthana, General Manager of RBI Shillong inaugurated the programme and M.Lakiang EAC attended as the guest of honor. Asthana, in his keynote address, highlighted on the importance of financial literacy and financial inclusion for the benefit of the general public. He also explained how the function played by RBI directly or indirectly affects the general public. Furthermore, he urged upon the stakeholders including banks and government departments to create awareness and provide the best possible services as the unfilled gaps in regulation or awareness generally breeds frauds. The programme was attended by youths, local residents of Nongkhrah  and nearby villages.

Misappropriation
SHILLONG: An amount of Rs 4.37 lakh has allegedly been misappropriated by the Manager of Bata store, GS Road. Elhanan M Kharkongor, Senior District Manager, Bata India Ltd., lodged a complaint that between August 16, 2018 and February 2019, one Deepak Singh Chandel, Manager Bata Store, GS Road, misappropriated stocks and cash of Bata company amounting to Rs 4,37,680.

Youth exchange programme 
TURA: A Youth Exchange Programme was organised in Tura recently by the West Garo Hills District Sports Office where the district Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh participated as Chief Guest. During the programme, eight institutions from the district participated and showcased their various talents in the events organised which included folk song, dance, quiz and debate competition, etc. In the quiz competition, Aeroville Higher Secondary School, Government Boys Higher Secondary School and St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively, while in the debate competition, Winona A Sangma from St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Rikchibel D Shira from Don Bosco College and Mikkimchi M Marak from Aeroville Higher Secondary School bagged the first, second and third prizes. In the folk dance competition, Don Bosco College, Aeroville Higher Secondary School and PASF received the first, second and third prizes respectively while Durama College, Government Boys Higher Secondary School and PASF bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively for folk song competition. In addition, Chukam T Sangma and Gedion R Marak from Durama College bagged the first and the second prizes for guitars while the top three prizes in the talent show were bagged by Grikjachong, Rikja Sangma and Eshana M Marak.
