SHILLONG: Nongthymmai MDC, Latiplang Kharkongor has urged the MLAs to take up the matter regarding the Constitutional (Scheduled Tribe) Order, 1950 during the autumn session starting from September 6-13. Speaking to reporters, he said that there are 53 non-indigenous tribes of the state who are not entitled to benefits received by the indigenous people.
He rued that the state of Meghalaya is still using the Presidential order of the state of Assam while other states in the North East have amended the Presidential Order.
Again, with reports of Benami surfacing every now and then, Kharkongor said the other non-indigenous tribes should also be checked since they are able to purchase land. With regard to the Amendment of Sixth Scheduled of the Indian Constitution, he said the definition of unrepresented tribe is not clearly defined.
