SHILLONG: Peter Sangma, a social activist and resident of Phulbari, Rongsaigre has demanded the state government to take action against the influx of illegal immigrants at the Phulbari, Chibinang, Rajabala and Bhaitbari areas, a statement issued here informed.
He said that the authorities are unaware about the issue in the aforementioned areas, therefore, he decided to intervene to serve the community.
“I feel we have been abandoned as they divided us calling plain belt area. No issues are being taken seriously in Tikirkilla, Phulbari, Chibinang, Bhaitbari, Rajabala, however, we are divided as Plain Belt Area and no activity is seen from NGOs neither the administration,” he said.
Since the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the residents of Phulbari, Rajabala, Chibinang, Bhaitbari locals have been observing influx of immigrants from Assam.
Between 2000 and 2005, there was no such village in Phulbari called Islampur, but now there are more than 200 households settled in the area besides other villages including Hallidayganj, Khoila Ghat and Saitan bazaar Chibinang.
He further said that there were a number of settlers along the NH 127B near Bhaitbari, whose identities were not known.
“At present the population of the intruders has reached double to that of the local populace. Therefore, I request the government and the organisations in the state to kindly draw their attention on the issue of influx at the aforementioned areas” he said.
He also suggested that the Government of Meghalaya should adopt the NRC to protect the interests of the indigenous people.
