SHILLONG: The state government has extended the deadline for the submission of magisterial inquiry report into the incident of mob violence at Mahendraganj on July 22 this year following reports of police firing at a mentally unstable person.
Replying to a query by Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma pointed out that the magisterial inquiry into the incident was ordered on July 25 and a timeline of 15 days was given to complete the inquiry.
However, the deadline for the submission of the inquiry report has been extended till September 30.
The opposition leader pointed out that there was not much publicity about the magisterial inquiry and asked the government to publicise the probe so that the residents can submit their views. Fuelled by rumours of a mentally challenged man being shot dead by the police, a mob of around 400 people had attacked the Mahendraganj police station and even tried to set it and a fire tender on fire while causing damage to several government vehicles. To a supplementary question, Conrad said that Additional District Magistrate S.C Laloo is probing the incident.
