SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Congress MDCs have criticised the Executive Committee for keeping them out of the committee on the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Opposition leader Lamphrang Blah said there is an apprehension that the rights enjoyed by the MDCs will undergo a change.
Congress MDC Ronnie Lyngdoh rued that the MDCs were not called to the meeting on the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule and said that at least one MDC from each party should be there.
“If the members of Meghalaya Indigenous Tribal Constitutional Rights Movement are part of committee (on Sixth Schedule), then why are the MDCs excluded?” Lyngdoh said.
Another Congress MDC Bajop Pyngrope said that only the Chief Executive Members of the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills have been included but asserted that elected representatives should also be part of the committee.
On the other hand, the Congress MDCs also criticised the KHADC Executive Committee for not following up on the Draft National Education Policy.
Lyngdoh said the EC should have followed up on the matter since the subject of primary education falls under the purview of the KHADC.
He said that the Union government should include minority schools in the National Education Policy.
He added that Hindi should be made compulsory from nursery to higher secondary.
