SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) Shillong unit has shot off a letter to the director of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Meghalaya objecting to the installation of an idol at the entrance of the Director’s Secretariat.
The president and general secretary of JSU, Treiborlang Suchen, and Request Pakma respectively have urged the administration to cancel the idea of installing the idol of lord Ganesh.
They maintained that such a step could hurt the sentiments of other faiths and beliefs of the students and staff within the campus.
The union suggested that the administration could install busts of renowned personalities from the fields of science, arts and literature in place of idols.
