NGH bodies file complaint against PHC
TURA: Organisations from North Garo Hills have filed a complaint against the authorities of the Resubelpara Primary Health Centre (PHC) alleging negligence as well as high-handedness while dealing with people who come to the centre. The joint complaint was filed by the AYWO, ADE, FKJGP and the Northern Zone GSU to the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of the district. The organisations have urged both officials to probe into the matter to avoid more incidents of neglect and harassment in future.

World Heart Day in city
Shillong: A World Heart Day celebration was held at the Don Bosco Technical Hall, Laitumkhrah, on Friday. During the programme, Secretary Health & Family Welfare and MD NHM & CEO MHIS P Bakshi said that World Heart Day is the perfect platform for citizens across the world to fight Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and reduce the global disease burden. Understanding the severity of CVD and other Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) which are the major factors that lead to premature deaths, Bakshi said countries across the globe have come up with innovative and attractive measures to control these diseases, adding that “In India, we have the Fit India Movement, a youth driven movement to encourage the citizens, especially the youth to take care of the health particularly the heart.” Extra Assistant Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, Isaac Marak, in his speech as the Guest of Honour, said, “By making just a few small changes to our lives, we can reduce our risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as improving our quality of life and setting a good example for the next generation.”

Gandhi Jayanti in Tura
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh called a meeting at DRDA Hall on Thursday and decided that Gandhi Jayanti celebration in Tura on Wednesday will be marked by different competitions and programmes. Among others, a free-for-all short Walkathon from Chandmary Playground to DC’s office will be organised as part of the celebration. A decision has also been taken to organise advance academic-inclined activities for school students like quiz, debate and seminars on different aspects of Gandhi’s life. Besides, the celebration will also witness mass cleaning drives by different localities.

Builders’ seminar on retrofitting
SHILLONG: A seminar on ‘Retrofitting of structures’ will be held at the State Convention Center here on Saturday. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, President of Indian Buildings Congress (IBC), Anoop Kumar Mittal, said that the North East Chapter suggested that the Governing Council meeting should be organised in Shillong. Elaborating on the theme, he said, “All the structures, buildings, bridges have some life and such structures require retrofitting from time to time. This is a huge subject. In Western countries, they regularly retrofit their old buildings and monuments.” IBC is a technical body founded on September 1, 1992 and registered as a society on March 29, 1993. IBC has around 7000 members and it is a purely construction activities related body with a focus on technical matters related to construction. The annual convention will be held on January 9 and 10 in Delhi.
