NONGPOH: The Ri Bhoi District Magistrate has banned the use of plastic with effect from September 25 in all the Syiemship, Sirdarship, Lyngdohship, Headmanship and other areas within its territorial jurisdiction.
This is in line with mandate of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.
Accordingly, the areas falling within the jurisdiction of Ri Bhoi have been declared as ‘no plastic zones’ with immediate effect and shopkeepers and traders have been directed to use alternative items in lieu of plastic.
The DM also requested all Syiems, Sirdars, Lyngdohs, Headmen and the public in general to come forward and join hand to stop the use of plastic in all forms.
