Shillong: The department of Political Science, St. Mary’s College in collaboration with Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) organised an awareness programme on ‘Human Rights and Issues Relating to Rights of Women’ on September 30 in the college auditorium.
The chief guest was former chairperson, Meghalaya Human Rights Commissiom, Dr Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia.
He gave an insight into the constitutional provision and protection of Human Rights and how a conscious citizen can bring about changes in social preparedness and add value components for better future of the society.
Speaking as a resource person was chairperson (Acting) Meghalaya Human Rights Commission, PJP Hanaman who highlighted on the role and function of the commission. He also spoke on issues pertaining to the jurisdiction of different target groups and process to follow while availing services of the commission.
The second resource person, Annie Sohtun, co-ordinator ,Meghalaya State Commission for Women spoke on the issue of trafficking of women from the North Eastern region which is a serious concern in the present context and challenges of rescuing these woman from such inhumane trap and stigma including their rehabilitation and social acceptance.
The programme was also graced by Aldous Mawlong, Bharati Sangma Retd. VP Lady Kean College., Arnold Nongbri and the vice-principal of St Mary’s College, M Badwar.
Students and teachers from different colleges were also present. Poster competition was also part of the programme where winners were given prizes.
