SHILLONG: Meghalaya police have alerted Tripura-Assam police forces and the BSF about the large number of Nigerians who crossed over to India illegally from Bangladesh and were arrested in Meghalaya last month.
The alert was to prevent further illegal entry of the foreigners.
Sources from the police said that Meghalaya police headquarters have already taken up the matter with Tripura and Assam police besides the BSF while the East Jaintia Hills SP at his level has also alerted his counterpart SP in Assam about the arrest of the Nigerian citizens.
East Jaintia Hills police, within a few days, had arrested as many as 17 foreigners, mostly Nigerian citizens while they were trying to reach Guwahati.
All the foreigners were arrested after they illegally crossed over to India from Bangladesh through Tripura route.
They were arrested from night super buses in East Jaintia Hills while they were trying to reach Guwahati and other places.
Sources also said that it appears that the foreigners, who were arrested, did not have a larger design in entering India and they were misled by someone.
All the foreigners are in judicial custody and lodged in different jails of the state.
