SHILLONG:  Meghalaya Cabinet will pass the amendments to the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety & Security Act in the next sitting in the form of an ordinance.

Taking to media persons after the meeting of the state Cabinet on Friday, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma informed that the proposed amendments to the act were discussed in details and the necessary requirements in the Act were proposed and the concerned department would work on the changes and bring it back to the Cabinet in its next meeting for approval

Confirming that the Government will bring about the amendments in the Act in the form of an ordinance, the Chief Minister added that the Government was ensuring that the amended Act   achieved the objective of protecting the people and at the same time ensuring that it caused minimum inconvenience to the people visiting the state.

Reacting to a query about the demands of the NGOs to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state, Sangma said that the objective was to protect the local people and Government was trying to find out different mechanisms and laws

“ILP is one of the mechanisms but it is not the only mechanism and there are different mechanism and laws under which the Constitution has given power to the state. If there can be a law which would enable the state to achieve the same objective of the ILP without going to the Union Government it would be much simpler solution,” he said.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Government would also hold an all-party meeting on the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety & Security Act after Diwali break.
