SHILLONG: Cabinet minister and Mylliem MLA, Hamlet Dohling said he will continue to fight and setup a police outpost at Old Umshyrpi Bridge despite the tussle of ownership of the said land between the Cantonment Board and PWD.
Addressing the press on Thursday, he said that a meeting of DIG (Eastern Range), DC of East Khasi Hills, Chief Engineer of PWD, president and secretary of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, Upper Shillong was held to discuss on constructing a police outpost at old Umshyrpi Bridge.
Peeved at the Cantonment Board claim that the land belongs to the Defence forces, Dohling said, “The Cantonment wants to forcefully claim the land to be its own. I am surprised… so I convened this meeting. The meeting was inconclusive and a next meeting will be held. But we are very clear that a police outpost should be set up in the area and it is unacceptable for the Cantonment Board to stake ownership of the land”.
Stating that he will continue to fight for the outpost, he said the land is in the custody of PWD. “How long will we bear the illegal encroachment of the Defence forces?”
Dohling said that he had inspected last year and found a vacant place which is over 2 acres near the bridge.
“It is difficult for people from Mylliem and other areas to go up till Jhalupara police outpost. Besides, setting up a police outpost at Old Umshyrpi Bridge will give the people a sense of security”, he added.
