Curfew lifted in Guwahati, broadband internet restored

GUWAHATI: Indefinite curfew that was clamped in Guwahati in Assam on December 11, has been lifted with immediate effect from Tuesday morning with the overall situation showing marked improvement. Curfew has been relaxed for 14 hours in Dibrugarh district in eastern Assam.
The state government has restored broadband internet service in the state but restriction on mobile internet service continued to be enforced.
A law and order review meeting was held on Monday evening at Brahmaputra State Guest House (BSGH) here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The meeting decided to lift curfew completely in Guwahati from 6 am of Tuesday.
The meeting also decided to resume operation of broadband internet services in entire State form Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, peaceful demonstration against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) continues in Guwahati and other parts of the state for the second consecutive day with protestors vowing not to rest until the CAA is withdrawn.
Thousands of people came out to protest in Guwahati, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Biswanath Charilai and other parts of Brahmaputra Valley against the CAA for the second consecutive day.
Assam’s Finance and PWD minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday stated that as the CAA was enacted by the Central government, the Centre may ‘at some point of time’ reach out to the peaceful agitators against the Act, but the state government would continue crackdown on those indulged in violence and vandalism taking advantage of the agitation.
