SHILLONG: A truck driver was killed after he was hit by another vehicle at Traw village near Ladmawreng.
Police said that it was a case of hit-and-run and the matter is being inquired.
The deceased has been identified as K Syiemsad.
Sources said that the driver got down from the truck to meet a person in a van, who allegedly collects money from coal trucks. However, the other truck, which had already met the person of the van, drove and hit the driver who was out of his vehicle.
The truck driver who hit Syiemsad was arrested, police officials informed.
However, police said that there is no further information about the incident as they were not present at the place when the incident happened.
Meanwhile, the North Garo Hills district administration is verifying the claims of the truck drivers that they have to pay Rs 26,000 to the government for plying coal trucks at Dainadubi.
Some videos of coal trucks plying in the district are going viral over social media in which truck drivers claim that they are required to pay Rs 26,000 to the government for plying coal trucks.
On the matter, North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu said that the movement of trucks has been restricted in the area due to New Year celebrations till January 4, adding that the District Administration has been directed to remain more vigilant.
Besides, he made it clear that the administration would not give any leniency to violation of any rules and regulations.
