SHILLONG: The Border Security Force Meghalaya seized 180 cattle worth Rs 23.16 lakh in East Khasi Hills and Jantia Hills during its vigil between Monday and Tuesday.
The BSF said that the seized cattle were intended to be smuggled from India to Bangladesh. There were significant smuggling attempts to cross over the cattle to Bangladesh but the same were foiled by the alert BSF troops, it added.
The smugglers tried to exploit the unfenced area but the BSF foiled their attempts. At few place the miscreants heavily confronted with the BSF troops, while the sentinels maintained utmost restraint to avoid losses to the civilians, the BSF informed.
The 444-km Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya State is interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrain which provide ideal opportunities for the trans-border criminals.
Since the menace of smuggling has suddenly increased in the state for the last few months, BSF has stepped up its special drive against the illegal intruders and has intensified its operations along the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminals.
