SHILLONG: The state BJP may have a new president by the end of this month.
The move to appoint a new president has been long pending.
BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh said the process of election till the district level in the party has been completed and even the central observers had visited the state to seek the views of the party leaders and workers on the appointment a new president of the party.
According to Lyngdoh, the central leadership would now finally take a call on who should be the new state president of the party and the state leaders are waiting for the party high command to take a decision in this regard.
He said there are seven-eight leaders who are good enough to become the state president of the party.
“The party at the Centre may appoint the new president and the new state team soon,” he added.
For the last 6 years, the performance of the party in the state has remained far from satisfactory as BJP till date has only two MLAs in its kitty.
The party in 2013 Assembly elections had contested 13 seats but it could not win even a single seat and in 2018 Assembly polls, the party in Meghalaya could win only two seats even as it contested more than 40 seats.Similarly, the party could not fare well even in Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats in 2019.
The setback in the state was contrary to the performance of the party at the Centre. The BJP, in the recent past, has been criticised for its stand on passing the contentious amended citizenship Act.
