NONGSTOIN: Armed Assam Police personnel on Friday flexed muscle inside Meghalaya territory and demolished a temporary bridge connecting Ukiam and Kyrshai in West Khasi Hills, a delayed report said here on Sunday.
Source informed that residents of Kyrshai, Nongspung, Mawpon and Ukiam had put in joint efforts to construct a temporary bridge at Kyrshai to help local farmers take their produce to Assam for sale. The area is inaccessible by road and the bridge was the only mode of communication for the villagers.
The FKJGP Kyrshai Unit condemned the act of the Assam Police and also asked the state government to act against the atrocities meted to the locals by Assam Police from time to time.
Francis Sohshang, president of the FKJGP Kyrshai Unit, lamented that such incidents happen on a regular basis but the state government remains indifferent to the suffering of the border residents. He added that representations were sent to the government and the Home Minister on more than one occasion but no action has been seen.
Sohshang asked the state government to set up a police outpost at Kyrshai since the border police wing set up earlier has failed to protect the border residents from the regular intrusions by Assam Police.
