Bormon Kacharis hold cultural event

SHILLONG: The Budai Medai puja festival and cultural programme was held recently at Sonatola village, East Khasi Hills organised by All Bormon Kachari Development Organization (ABKDO) and All Bormon Kachari Student Union (ABKSU). It is the main festival of the Bormon Kachari community, one of the oldest tribes of Northeast India. The festival and cultural programme was attended by KHADC, Mawsynram MDC, Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie as chief guest besides dignitaries from Garo, Khasi and Bengali community.
The ABKSU president, Sayan Bormon said that the Bormon Kachari is the indigenous tribe of this region and is enjoying Schedule Tribe status in Assam since 1950 whereas “the same Bormon brothers and sisters are lagging behind economically, educationally and rights of status in Meghalaya.”
ABKSU publicity secretary Sanjit Bormon said that a delegation of the Bormon Kachari community has taken up the matter of granting Schedule Tribe status to the community with the state government at the main civil secretariat recently and learnt that their demand is under process.
