Meet held on welfare schemes for children with disabilities

TURA: A high-level meeting was held here at Montfort Centre for Education in collaboration with the Community Based Rehabilitation of Caritas India NGO from Bangalore on Wednesday to look at the various welfare schemes for children with special needs.

The programme mainly focused on child welfare especially for Children with Disabilities (CWDs). Officers of different departments spoke on the opportunities that can be availed and work they do in this criteria including grants for medical treatment, for which their procedures and terms and conditions were explained and topics like Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS), Juvenile Justice Act (JJA) and different types of mental health related problems like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Schizophrenia & bipolar disorder were discussed.

The programme was attended by Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, Deputy SP of West Garo Hills John Clitzer A Sangma, Ms. Netra Shikha Dutta, Programme Officer, Caritas India, Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) forum, Guwahati Office, Ms. C.J Sangma, District Education Officer, West Garo Hills, Ms. Junichi K. Marak, District Child Protection Officer, West Garo Hills, Dr. Ivone M. Sangma, District MCH Officer-cum-Nodal Officer, RBSK, West Garo Hills, Smt. Smilish B. Marak, Counsellor, DCPU and also by Disable People’s Organisation (DPO) from Gambegre Block.

Montfort Centre director K J Jose welcomed the gathering and spoke about the need to work in collaboration for the benefit of PWDs.

Netra Shikha Dutta, Programme Officer of Caritas India shared about CBR overall activates and plans while Dipankar Roy, Loan Processing Officer of MRB, Tura spoke on how loans can be processed for Self help group with National Rural Livelihood’s (NRLM) approval.

A brief summary on CBR in Damalgre and Gambegre block was given by Sanju M. Sangma, CBR coordinator, Montfort Centre for education, Tura and the memorandum was read out by  Jasmine D. Sangma- Special Educator of the Centre. The DC answered and clarified on few of the points raised in the memorandum and spoke about the job reservation provided by the Government of India for Persons with disabilities (PWDs).
