SHILLONG: South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, along with general secretary of Shillong Cantonment Area Development Committee Bipen Pradhan, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma seeking state government intervention in the request for public use of Garrison Ground besides implementation of municipal building bye-laws to Shillong Cantonment area.
The BJP MLA requested Sangma to lead a delegation to meet Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as the defence authorities do not allow the civilian to use the ground for any purpose.
He said that the transfer of Garrison Ground for civilian use was also requested earlier, but nothing concrete has ever materialised.
Shullai requested the state government to move the central authorities to sign an MoU with defence authorities for utilisation of ground by both civilian and defence personnels as there is no reason to hold the ground, which is centrally located and underutilised.
The BJP MLA said that this would benefit the interest of both the civilians and defence authorities.
