Rajya Sabha polls in Meghalaya on March 26

SHILLONG: The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Meghalaya will be held along with the other 54 vacant seats across 17 States on March 26.

The state Election Commission on Tuesday told that the polling and counting for 55 Rajya Sabha seats will take place on March 26, as the seats will fall vacant in April due to retirement of sitting members.

The term of the present Rajya Sabha MP from the state , Wansuk Syiem would end on April 12.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Chief Electoral Officer,Frederick R. Kharkongor said that the voting for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha would be held in old Assembly campus at Khyndailad.

He said that the time of voting is from 9 am to 4 pm on March 26 adding that the counting votes will be held on the same day an hour after conclusion of polls.

According to the Election Commission of India, the notification for the elections will be issued on March 06 while the last date to file nominations is on March 13.

The scrutiny will take place on March 16 and last date for withdrawal of candidature is on March 18.

The ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) so far has not announced its candidates even as there are few probable candidates within the alliance who are looking to contest the elections.

On the other hand, Congress leader, Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said that he couldn’t comment on the matter since a final decision regarding the election will be taken by the party as a whole.
