SHILLONG: Citizens, of late, have been found complaining against overcharging by local taxi drivers as well as overloading of passengers while ferrying to destinations around the city.
However, as per the notification dated January 13, the rates of taxi fare from point-to-point for local taxis have been duly accorded and passengers as well as the drivers adhering to the norms can ease the burden for all.
The fare for journey by local taxi, with maximum 4 occupants, shall be Rs 26 for the first km and Rs 13 for every subsequent km or part thereof.
The passengers will also be charged Rs 7 for every 5 minutes or part thereof for detaining a local taxi, the notification says.
While, the criteria of distance are not known, the notification mentions about the distance and the amount of local taxi fare to be charged from not more than 4 passengers.
For instance, if a person travels from Iewduh to Lumdiengjri or IGP to Dhankheti (the distance is taken to be 1 km in the notification), the amount of taxi fare will be Rs 26 (to be charged from not more than 4 passengers).
Moreover, to journey to Rilbong from Police Bazaar (3 km), the taxi fare is Rs 52. Meanwhile, the rate for a drive from Police Bazaar to Mawblei (7 km) is Rs 117 and from Police Bazaar to Laban (2.1 km) it is Rs 52.
Sources said that there is discrepancy in calculating the distance and also the fare.
