SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has expressed concern over the death of the KSU member Lurshai Hynniewta after he was beaten up by non-locals at Ichamati on Friday.
In a statement issued here, JSU stated that the non-locals have showed their strength against the local indigenous people. In this connection, the organisation has urged the indigenous people to not allow non-indigenous people to work as labourers and not to be involved in Benami Transaction with them.
The JSU has condemned the MDA government saying that it is a government busy with festivals and duping the public and demanded the arrest of the culprits and stringent action against them. The organisation also criticized the government for internet shutdown and imposing curfew due to clashes in the state.
The JSU has conveyed its condolence to the members of the bereaved family and to the KSU.
Kharshiings expresses concern
On the other hand, the leader of Federation of Khasi States, John Kharshiing has extended solidarity on the death of Hynniewta.
The CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing has also expressed concern about Friday’s incident in Shella. She said that the CSWO was also informed that on Saturday some non Tribals were attacked in Shillong.
“Violence in the state is strongly condemned and the organisation demands that the government should initiate an inquiry as to what brought to an extent of taking away lives and injuries to many people in Shella and Shillong. The society cannot live in fear and the government has to ensure safety of all the people in the state”, she said.
TUR has also condemned violence and urged the citizens to maintain peace.
