TURA: The importance of doing away with plastic and replacing the same with biodegradable and organic items was the key message during celebration of World Consumer Day here at Don Bosco College on Monday.
Taking part in the celebrations, vDeputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Ram Singh highlighted the need for sustaining the environment through sustainable consumer which is the theme of this years’ World Consumer Rights Day.
“Generations today are aware of the harm they did to the environment, however there is a felt needs to sustain the ecosystem,” said Ram Singh and reminded everyone that the generation of today is responsible for the future of the society.
Prof C.P. Suresh from the Department of Horticulture, NEHU Tura Campus highlighted on the theme “The Sustainable Consumer.” He implored those present to use organic materials to sustain the environment. He added that plastic used by consumers to buy the product from the market are dangerous to the environment and to human beings.
World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year on March 15. It is a day marked to raise global awareness about consumer rights and needs. Celebrating World Consumer Rights Day is a chance to demand that the rights of all consumers are respected and protected, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.
Talks were also held by other invitees on ‘Food Safety’ and the ‘National Food Security Act’ and later, a ‘Food Sale’ prepared by the fourth semester students of the commerce department of the college was inaugurated.
