Police clarify on vegetable sellers detained in Byrnihat

SHILLONG: The office of the Director General of Police, in a press statement, informed that fake news has been circulated through social media and other medium regarding two men affected with COVID-19 being caught in Byrnihat.
The message that was circulated said that “one muslim man who attended the Delhi congregation (terrorist) and who is affected with Covid-19 has been caught at Byrnihat and two of his companions who came along with him to spread the virus have escaped and their whereabouts are still unknown.”
The police in this regard clarified that the duo Jeherul Islam and Majibar Rehman, both from Barpeta, Assam came to Byrnihat in a vehicle and as they were passing through the area they were detained by villagers, who then handed them over to police officials of Byrnihat out post.
The detained duo on being questioned, informed that they were vegetable sellers and that they have been moving from Assam to Meghalaya for the purpose of selling vegetables.
The particulars of both the individuals were verified
and it was ascertained that they have not attended the Tablighi Meet in Nizamuddin nor are individuals who have fled away from any of the quarantine center in Assam, the statement said.
The police are on the lookout for those propagating the message, and it was reiterated that stern actions will be taken against those circulating such messages.
