SHILLONG: Twenty foreigners stranded in Shillong have been transported in a bus to Kolkata via Guwahati and Siliguri on Monday.
Later, they will be taken in a special flight to their respective countries — The United States, Spain and Denmark, an official source told The Shillong Times.
There are altogether 15 US nationals, 2 from Spain and 3 from Denmark. The foreigners will be leaving on April 22 from Kolkata airport. The foreigners, mostly tourists, were stranded in Shillong since February.
As per the instruction of the union ministry of external affairs, the state government has facilitated their travel. “They left Shillong on Monday and the travel plan is to reach Guwahati first and then the bus will travel to Siliguri and finally Kolkata where they will board a flight”, the official added.
Earlier, ten foreigners standing with their luggage at Fire Brigade, Laitumkhrah piqued the curiosity of some onlookers.
After some time, a bus carrying others arrived with a notice “evacuation of citizens” pasted on the front and the rear glass of the bus.
The police personnel from Laitumkhrah police station spoke to the foreigners and took their details before departure.
They waved “goodbyes” to the police personnel before departing.
Last week, a few people from Poland have also left Shillong.
