SHILLONG: Education department is planning to shortly introduce bio-metric system of attendance for both teachers and students in two government schools in the city in an apparent attempt to streamline attendance.
Informing this, Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui named two schools— Government Boys’ Higher Secondary and Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School.
It was informed that the decision was taken before the COVID-19 pandemic and now a call would be taken in this regard when situation improves and schools eventually reopen.
He however made it clear that the system would follow in other schools only if the idea is found to be satisfactory in the two schools. The government is also contemplating to start live classrooms as a pilot project in these two schools to allow parents to see what their children are doing in the classrooms.
On the monitoring of the performance of the teachers in the government schools, he sounded words of caution that the department will transfer any teacher whose performance is not satisfactory and replace them with better teachers.
He also disclosed that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs had agreed in principle to provide the necessary financial assistance for the scholarship to be provided to students to meet the college fees.
The Fees Fixation Committee after seven years had its first sitting last year and recommended the fees for the students adding that the fees recommended by the committee will form the basis of the scholarship to be provided to the students.
Informing that the students were getting Rs 4000 as scholarship, the minister added that from next year, they will be getting a scholarship of Rs 15,000.
Rymbui said that the government will reimburse in the form of scholarships the college fees which are due to be paid by the students.
