NONGSTOIN: The district officials of West Khasi Hills in a meeting on Tuesday discussed the urgency of setting up a slaughterhouse for the district in order to maintain hygiene and safety of consumers.
The meeting, convened by District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer W Hoojon and his team in the office chamber of the ADC, was attended by representatives of the Police Department, Nongstoin Butcher & Social Welfare Association, DAO, DTO and DPRO.
It was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner AVD Shira.
The department concerned has been asked to take up the setting up of the slaughterhouse with the local authority including the Syiem of Hima Nongstoin and members of the Nongstoin Town Committee (NTC) for the required land.
The veterinary officer, Hoojon, in his speech, informed that with the slaughter house, the office can make regular examination of animals meant for consumption. The meeting also expressed the need for regular vaccination of dogs, cats, cows and other animals.
Vaccination is being given at all veterinary hospitals on all working days between 10 am and 3 pm. The department urged upon the people to come forward and get their pets vaccinated on a regular basis.
The representatives of the Butcher Association said awareness programmes as per the Act and guidelines against cruelty to animals have been carried out among its members including persons engaged in slaughtering.
