SHILLONG: Newly elected Rajya Sabha member WR Kharlukhi said on Wednesday he would continue to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Kharlukhi, who is also the head of the NPP’s state unit, said he would follow the resolution passed by the state Assembly on the issue.
In March this year, the state Assembly had passed a resolution to oppose the citizenship bill after waves of protests shook the state as well as the entire country. “And it should be opposed,” Kharlukhi said.
Asked about Tura MP Agatha Sangma who voted in favour of the bill, Kharlukhi said it was her personal decision.
“Infact, the Tura MP wanted North East to be exempted from the purview of CAA but it was misinterpreted”, Kharlukhi said.
Besides taking up the important issues of CAA and Inner Line Permit in the Upper House, Kharlukhi also wants to take part in every debate on the floor.
“That is what is expected of us,” he said in the NPP office in the city where a ceremony was organised on Wednesday to honour the senior leader.
“This is the first time I am in parliamentary politics. There are many issues and I am aware of people’s demands,” he added.
Kharlukhi said his visit to Delhi is yet to be decided in view of COVID-19.
