SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has issued notice to the government to probe lack of support to Dorbars in their fight against COVID-19.
The Dorbars had said that they were not getting government support in terms of availing equipment and in maintaining community quarantine centres.
The MHRC chairperson, Justice T Vaiphei, in response to a news item published in The Shillong Times on June 14 regarding the matter, took suo motu action.
The Commission is of the view that there is a likelihood that lack of support to the community quarantine centres could further result in the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, thereby exposing the volunteers and the community assisting the inmates of the community quarantine centres to greater risk of infection.
“Right to life is a fundamental right as mandated by Article 21 of the Constitution and it is therefore imperative that the state government undertakes necessary steps to alleviate the current state of affairs in the community quarantine centres to ensure that the COVID-19 does not further spread within the community”, the MPHRC said.
While issuing notice to the chief secretary to cause an effective inquiry into the entire matter by an officer of the rank of Commissioner and Secretary, the MPHRC wanted the detailed report to reach the Commission within 30 days.
