CBI to probe father-son custodial deaths: TN CM

Salem: As the custodial deaths of father-son duo at Sathankulam in Tuticorin district due to alleged police excesses created an uproar, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday, said the investigation into the matter would be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Talking to reporters after inaugurating various projects here, he said that post getting permission from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which had suo motu taken cognisance of the deaths and said it would be monitoring the case, the probe would be transferred to the CBI.
On Saturday, Opposition DMK president, MK Stalin had threatened that his party would move the court seeking a CBI probe if the Chief Minister did not ensure a fair probe and arrest the cops involved in the ‘killings’.
Palaniswami said the police department were also directed not to harass or beat the public if they violated the corona lockdown guidelines.
Meanwhile, Chennai City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan said police should not hit people. It may be recalled that father-son duo, Jayaraj and Benicks died allegedly due to police excesses recently. (UNI)
