TURA: The All Meghalaya Minorities Students’ Union (AMMSU) on Wednesday sought the official declaration of the flood situation in the plain belt regions of West Garo Hills and to provide financial assistance to those affected, even as the district administration has said that it is yet to receive the ground report of the situation from concerned officials.
In its letter to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the union informed that flood waters have affected the entire plain belt region right from Tikrikilla to Mahendraganj rendering many people homeless due to the absence of proper relief camps. The union added that agriculture crops like paddy, vegetables and others have been destroyed in the floods resulting in great loss to the farmers.
According to the union, some portions of the region are also facing the threat of being cut off from the rest as many wooden bridges on link roads are on the verge of collapse due to the inflow of flood waters from the Brahmaputra and Jinjiram rivers.
Meanwhile, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh when contacted informed that the flood situation is yet to be declared in the region as no official report of the situation has been received from BDOs as of now,
“We are still monitoring the situation. We have to get the official report and once it is received, we will declare the flood,” Ram Singh said adding, his administration was also keeping in touch with officials from Dhubri and Singgimari.
