14 killed in China rainstorm
Beijing: Torrential rains battered southwest China’s Sichuan province, killing at least 14 people and leaving 10 missing, authorities said.
The Mianning county has been badly hit by the torrential rains since Sunday. The heavy rainstorm has killed at least 14 people and left eight missing on Tuesday in the Mianning county, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Currently, 5,660 people are in temporary settlements in Yihai Township and Gaoyang sub-district in the county, the report said. Rescue and relief efforts are underway, the report added. (PTI)
Fire damages Thailand mansion
Bangkok: A gaudy mansion in a Buddhist-themed tourist park in Thailand’s seaside resort city of Pattaya was seriously damaged by a fire on Wednesday that sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
No one was injured in the blaze at Baan Sukhawadee, Banglamung district police Maj. SithawatChawakorntherarat said.
The beachfront property, covering 12.8 hectares (31.6 acres), houses gardens, buildings and statues devoted to Chinese and Thai culture and history. Sithawat said the fire broke out at about 10:30 a.m. and was put under control about four hours later. The cause was being investigated, he said. (AP)
Trump’s tell-all memoir blocked
New York: A New York judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s niece from publishing a tell-all memoir about the first family, a media report said on Wednesday. Mary Trump’s upcoming book, “Too Much and Never Enough, How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man”, is due to be published on July 28, said the BBC report.
The book claims to reveal “a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse”. (IANS)
‘Iran n-deal remains crucial’
United Nations: The Iran nuclear deal remains crucial to regional and international security, said Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN undersecretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs.
“The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), endorsed by (Security Council) Resolution 2231, is a significant achievement of multilateral diplomacy and dialogue. It remains crucial to the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture and to regional and international security,” DiCarlo told the Security Council on Tuesday. (IANS)
