State’s impact report worries group
SHILLONG: Fridays For Future, Meghalaya, on Friday expressed concern over the effect of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) 2020 notification on Meghalaya. It also expressed objection and submitted a memorandum against the proposed EIA draft. “Our state is already severely plagued by lax enforcement of environmental protection and accountability on the micro-level, particularly with regard to mining of coal and limestone, the unregulated release of effluents by factories and rampant deforestation. We are appalled that in such a time, the MOEFCC is attempting to dilute our environmental protection mechanisms through this shoddy draft,” it said in a statement. It also said that the draft EIA lacks the understanding and sensitivity of the adverse effects it will have on the tribal communities in central and Northeastern India, adding that the new draft will encourage industries and factories to disregard the environment. “This announcement by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MOEFCC) is gravely flawed and hastily prepared without proper consideration of its future impact. It oddly comes at a time of the pandemic, when we should be focusing our resources and efforts towards sustainability and conservations,” it said.
