NONGSTOIN: An RCC footbridge at Lawrapha village connecting Mawkynrum and other villages in Umyiap area collapsed due to the incessant rain.
Flash flood triggered by the downpour caused the collapse of the footbridge from the middle after the pillar was washed away.
Sordar of Lawrapha, Dermostar Lyngdoh Nonglait, informed that no causalities were reported in the collapse.
However, it has mainly affected the farmers of the area who use the bridge during commutes.
Around 95 per cent of the population in Lawrapha and Umyiap area depends mainly on agriculture.
After learning about the incident, Nongstoin MLA, Macmillan Byrsat, along with village authority of Lawrapha carried out the inspection on Monday to assess the damage.
The MLA also visited the community hall and Lawrapha Presbyterian UP School, which was badly affected by heavy rainfall and cyclonic storm.
Speaking to pressmen, Byrsat informed that the RCC bridge will be constructed after the rains and it will be funded through MLA scheme.
While asserting that the selection of a new location for the proposed construction of new RCC bridge had been done on the day of inspection, the MLA said that repairing the old bridge is only a waste of money as flash floods will return.
Expressing concern over the damages due to flash flood, Byrsat directed the village authority to send a letter to the department of Water Resource, Nongstoin. While assuring that repair works for Lawrapha Presbyterian UP School and the community hall will be taken up at the earliest.
The legislator said that he will follow up the matter.
