Villarreal:Unai Emery has agreed to coach Villarreal for the next three seasons, the Spanish club said Thursday.
Emery last coached at Arsenal but he was fired in November, 18 months after replacing Arsene Wegner. Previously, he won the French league title with Paris Saint-Germain.
Emery’s biggest successes have come with Spanish clubs. He won three consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla from 2014-16 and had a five-year stint at Valencia.
Villarreal finished the Spanish league season in fifth place, earning it a Europa League spot. But it still let coach Javier Calleja go. After a modest playing career spent mostly in Spain’s Segunda División, Emery transitioned into coaching after retiring in 2004.
He began at Lorca Deportiva, where he achieved promotion to the Segunda División in his first season and was subsequently awarded the Miguel Muñoz Trophy. He then joined Almería, who he led to promotion to La Liga for the first time in the club’s history.
This earned him a move to La Liga heavyweights Valencia, where he regularly led the team to top-three finishes. After leaving Valencia, he coached Spartak Moscow for six months, before moving to Sevilla in 2013.(AP)
