SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has called for cancellation of final examination and has also urged North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to assess the marks of the students based on past performance instead of holding online examinations.
In a letter to Vice-Chancellor, the NEHUSU stated that online classes have not helped the students much in coping with the syllabus, adding that “any insistence of a final examination is like adding salt to the injury of the students in the most insensitive and irresponsible manner”.
Suggesting that NEHU “should not accept the diktat of UGC”, the NEHUSU urged the university to explore ways with all the stakeholders to resolve the issue, taking into account the safety of the students.
“As there are better and innovative ways to assess and students can also produce a self-assessment, if it is so desired, there are many more improved and futuristic ways of ensuring quality for the students amid the pandemic situation,” the NEHUSU said.
“Suo moto, we suggest an assessment based on averages drawn out of past performances instead of farcical online examination. As offline physical examination is out of question, any other means or methods are fraught with some problems of transparency and regulation. Hence, we would request you to explore new ways instead of old, hackneyed idea of a final examination,” it added.
